Biography

Houston-born Hanan Alattar is quickly establishing herself as a versatile lyric coloratura in the United States and abroad. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin and received a Master’s degree from the Juilliard School, as well as an Artist’s Diploma. In 2011, Ms Alattar debuted with Seattle Opera in the role of Pamina. She returned to Austin Lyric Opera for another Magic Flute as well. She began the 2009-10 season with Rosina in Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s new production of the Corigliano’s famous The Ghost of Versailles and her her debut with Boston Lyric Opera as Micaela in a new production of Bizet’s Carmen. Recently she has completed two brand new productions playing the role of Clarice in Il mondo della luna with Gotham Chamber Opera and Diane Paulus at the Hayden Planetarium and returning to ENO to sing the role of Leila in the Pearl Fishers. This was also a new production, directed by the film-maker and opera director Penny Woolcock. Upcoming performances include Mozart’s Requiem with the Seattle Symphony and Pamina in Die Zauberflote with Seattle Opera.

In 2008-2009, Hanan made her debuts to critical acclaim at the Ravinia Festival as Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with James Conlon and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and with English National Opera’s La Boheme in the role of Musetta. “Things looked up in the Café Momus act, where Texas-born Hanan Alattar brought vocal brightness and point to Musetta’s waltz song and a cheeky vitality to her characterization.” With equal success, Ms Alattar performed with Daniel Barenboim both at the Salzburg Festival in a concert with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and in Manon with the Berlin Staatsoper. Ms Alattar’s vocal flexibility and excellent musicianship has allowed her to collect an extensive list of repertoire.

The lyric coloratura’s opera engagements have included Gilda in Rigoletto at Palm Beach Opera and Opera Santa Barbara, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Arizona Opera,  Dragonette in the world premiere of Elliot Goldenthal’s Grendel, directed by Julie Taymor, at both the Los Angeles Opera and the Lincoln Center Festival; productions of Don Carlo(Heavenly Voice), L’incoronazione di Poppea(Amore and Damigella) at the Los Angeles Opera, and Manon covering the title role and singing Pousette, now on DVD from Deutsche Grammophone conducted by Placido Domingo. With New York City Opera, Hanan sang the roles of Water in The Little Prince, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and First Maid in Daphne.

With her dramatic intensity and love for acting, Alattar thrives in complex characters and the challenges that they bring. She created a new Musetta for Jonathan Miller’s production of La Boheme for English National Opera with great success(now on Classicaltv.com), melding a cross between 1920’s and the Brassai cultural aesthetic. Ms Alattar explored gender-bending as Alceste in Arianna in Creta with Christoper Alden at the Gotham Chamber Opera, and created the role of Sacagawea in Stephen Mager’s new children’s opera Dream of the Pacific at the Opera Theater of Saint Louis. She has performed the role of Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and also with great success, the title role in The Nightingale by Stravinsky.  In the rarely performed work Der Zwerg, she worked with Olivier Tambosi and developed the role of Ghita, to which the New York Times reviewed, “Hanan Alattar is excellent as Ghita…”  As a New Horizon Scholar at the Aspen Music Festival, her many appearances there included Blanche in Dialogues des Carmélites, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro, the title role of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, and a concert performance Stravinsky’s Les Noces.

Ms. Alattar’s many concert engagements have included countless portrayals of the role of Bubikoph in Victor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy and the Central Synagogue in New York City, all under the baton of James Conlon; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the title role in Rusalka in fully staged concert performances with Miguel Harth Bodoya and the Forth Worth Symphony. She performed Barber’s Prayers of Kierkegaard with University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, and she has also been presented in recital in New York’s Weill Hall by the Marilyn Horne Foundation. This season, she was again presented in recital by the Marilyn Horne Foundation and returned to sing and record with Ft. Worth Symphony, Behzad Ranjbaran’s piece Songs of Eternity.

Ms Alattar  is also the recipient of a 2004 Sullivan Foundation Award, the winner of the 2002 Aspen Concerto Competition, and was a finalist in the Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers.
